The Essential Elements of the Islamic Disposition (Nafsiyyah)

Hizb ut Tahrir

In this book, we present to Muslims in general, and to those carrying the call to Islam in particular, the components of the Islamic psyche. This is so that the tongue of the one carrying the call, while working to establish the Caliphate, is moist with the remembrance of God, their heart is filled with the fear of God, and their limbs hasten to do good deeds. They recite the Quran and act upon it, love God and His Messenger, love for the sake of God and hate for the sake of God, hope for God's mercy and fear His punishment, are patient, seeking reward, sincere to God, and relying on Him. They are steadfast on the truth like a towering mountain, gentle, easy-going, and merciful to the believers, firm and mighty against the disbelievers, not taking into account the blame of any critic in the cause of God, of good character, sweet in speech, strong in argument, enjoining good and forbidding evil, walking in the world and working in it while their eyes look towards Paradise, as wide as the heavens and the earth, prepared for the righteous. We must also remind those carrying the call, those working to resume the Islamic way of life on earth by establishing the Rightly Guided Caliphate, of the reality in which they are working. Waves of enemies of God and His Messenger surround them, and if they are not with God at all times, day and night, how will they make their way through the crowd? How will they reach what they hope for? How will they ascend from one peak to another? How? And how?

مقدمة / Introduction

The personality in every human being consists of their mentality and psychology, and has nothing to do with their shape, body, attire, or anything else, as these are all superficial. It is superficial to think that any of these is a factor or influence on the personality. The mentality is the way in which the mind judges things, that is, issuing a judgment on them according to a specific rule that a person believes in and is comfortable with. If his mind judges things based on the Islamic creed, then his mentality is Islamic, and if it is not, then his mentality is something else. The psychology is the way in which the instincts and organic needs are satisfied, that is, carrying out the process of satisfaction according to a rule that a person believes in and is comfortable with. If the satisfaction of his instincts and organic needs is based on the Islamic creed, then his psychology is Islamic, and if the satisfaction is not based on Islamic creed then his psychology is something else. If the rule for the mentality and psychology is the same for a person, then his personality is distinct and disciplined. If the Islamic creed is the basis for his mentality and psychology, then his personality is Islamic, and if it is not, then his personality is something else. Accordingly, it is not enough for the mentality to be Islamic, that its possessor issues judgments on things and actions correctly according to the rulings of Islamic law, extracting rulings and knowing the lawful and unlawful, and being mature in his awareness and thought, saying a strong and eloquent statement, and analyzing events in a sound manner. That is not enough unless his psychology is also an Islamic psychology, so he satisfies his instincts and organic needs based on Islam, prays, fasts, gives charity, performs Hajj, does what is lawful and avoids what is unlawful, and is where God loves him to be, and draws near to Him by what He has obligated upon him and is keen to perform voluntary acts, so he increases in closeness to God. He takes sincere and honest stances towards events, enjoins good and forbids evil, loves for the sake of God and hates for the sake of God, and treats people with good character. Likewise, it is not enough for his psychology to be Islamic and his mentality not to be so. Worshipping God in ignorance may deviate its possessor from the straight path. He may fast on a forbidden day, and pray where prayer is disliked, and say "There is no might nor power except with God" in front of someone committing an evil he sees, instead of denouncing and forbidding him. He may deal with usury and give this usury as charity to draw closer to God, under the pretext of doing so, at the same time as he has plunged into the swamp of his sin. That is, he may do wrong while thinking that he is doing good, so his satisfaction of his instincts and organic needs is not as God Almighty and His Messenger, may God bless him and his family, have commanded. The matter is not right unless a person's mentality is Islamic, knowing what is required of him from the rulings of Islamic law, increasing his knowledge of Islamic law as much as he can, and at the same time his psychology is Islamic, so he is fulfilling the rulings of Islamic law, not just knowing them, but applying them in all his affairs, with his Creator, with himself, and with others, in the way that God loves and is pleased with. If his mentality and psychology are disciplined by Islam, then he has an Islamic personality that makes its way to good amidst the crowd, not fearing the blame of any critic in the cause of God. This does not mean the absence of gaps in behavior, but they do not affect the personality as long as they are an exception and not a rule, because man is not an angel, but he makes mistakes and seeks forgiveness and repents, and does right and praises God for His favor and guidance. The more the Muslim increases his Islamic knowledge to develop his mentality, and the more he increases his acts of obedience to strengthen his psychology, the more he moves towards the sublime ascent and remains steadfast on this ascent, but rather ascends from high to higher. In this case, he takes possession of life with its right, and attains the Hereafter by striving for it while he is a believer, and is an ally of the mihrab and at the same time a hero of jihad, the highest quality of his qualities is that he is a servant of God Almighty, his Creator and Maker.

خاتمة / Conclusion

Finally, let those carrying the call ponder two illuminating hadiths that illuminate their path to reach their goals, with their light shining before them: The first: "The first of your religion is Prophethood and mercy, then Caliphate on the method of Prophethood... then Caliphate will return on the method of Prophethood." In this hadith is glad tidings that the Caliphate is returning, God willing, but it is returning like the first Caliphate, the Caliphate of the Rightly Guided, the companions of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, so whoever is keen to return, longing to see it, let him strive for it while he is a believer, to be like the companions of the Messenger of God, may God bless him and his family, or near them. The second: "God Almighty said: 'Whoever humiliates a friend of Mine has declared war against Me. O son of Adam, you will not attain what I have except by performing what I have obligated upon you. And My servant continues to draw closer to Me with voluntary acts until I love him, so I become his heart with which he understands, his tongue with which he speaks, and his sight with which he sees. If he calls upon Me, I will answer him, and if he asks Me, I will give him, and if he seeks My help, I will help him, and the most beloved worship of My servant to Me is advice.'" Narrated by Al-Tabarani in Al-Kabeer. In this hadith is a statement of the way to God's victory and help, and support from Him, by drawing near to Him and seeking His help, for He is the Strong, the Mighty, whoever He helps will not be forsaken, and whoever He forsakes will not be helped, and He is near to His servant if he calls upon Him, answering him if he responds to Him, He is the Subduer over His servants, and He is the Subtle, the Aware. So hasten, brothers, to God's pleasure, to His forgiveness, to His Paradise, to His victory, to success in both worlds {And in that let the competitors compete}.
