Police Killings: A Brutal Capitalist Mentality Characterized by Impunity

Three police officers in Kenya have been charged with the murder of a 31-year-old blogger who died in police custody earlier this month. The death of Albert Ojuang has sparked outrage in Kenya, where protests have been organized to demand justice.

Hizb ut-Tahrir / Kenya would like to highlight the following:

Security agencies under any secular liberal system, such as Kenya, are an extension of a colonial system used by the British to control the population and suppress dissent. During the 1950s, as Kenyans began to assert their right to govern themselves, police and other British security agencies arrested tens of thousands of them and hanged more than a thousand. Police forces appear to view ordinary people as a potential threat to the ruling administration, an approach originally designed to enforce colonial rule, not to protect them.

Ideologically, secular liberal systems sanctify interest and benefit above human life and property, making corruption, impunity, and state capture a political norm. With this in mind, killings by state organs with impunity are the only means of curbing any dissenting voices or efforts to expose widespread corruption. It should be noted that the brutality and torture practiced by state organs is a global trend and is not exclusive to Kenya.

We emphasize that human life, or rather all lives, are sacred and deserve absolute protection from the state without fear or favour. In Islam, protecting human life is of paramount importance, and is considered a sacred trust from God Almighty. Islam emphasizes the sanctity of the soul, prohibits taking it unjustly, and commands its preservation and dignity for all people.

We affirm that under the Rightly Guided Khilafah on the Prophetic Method, which will soon be established by God's permission, police forces will be responsible for maintaining public order, enforcing laws, and investigating crimes. Torture is absolutely prohibited, and any police officer convicted of committing physical assault or torture against anyone, Muslim or non-Muslim, will be held accountable. Therefore, the police forces will be fully committed to maintaining law and order and thus protecting the lives and property of the citizens.
