The Imamate: A General Presidency and a Complete Leadership
Abu al-Ma'ali al-Juwayni said (in Ghiyath al-Umam): "The Imamate is a general presidency and a complete leadership, pertaining to the elite and the general public in important religious and worldly matters, including the preservation of the domain and the care of the subjects, the establishment of the call with proof and the sword, the prevention of deviation and injustice, the redress of the oppressed from the oppressors, the collection of rights from those who refuse to pay and the fulfillment of them to those who deserve them... If the obligation to appoint an Imam is established, then what the majority of Imams have adhered to is that the obligation to appoint is derived from transmitted Sharia..."
