The Virtue of Patience and the Patient
God Almighty described the patient with descriptions, and mentioned patience in the Qur’an in over seventy places and added most of the good things to it, saying: {And We made from among them leaders guiding by Our command when they were patient}, and He said: {And the good word of your Lord was fulfilled for the Children of Israel because of what they patiently endured}, and He said: {And We will surely reward those who were patient [with] their reward according to the best of what they used to do}, and He said: {Those will be given their reward twice for what they patiently endured}, and He said: {Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account}, so there is no obedience except that its reward is predetermined except for patience, and because fasting is a form of patience, God Almighty said: "Fasting is for Me" so He attributed it to Himself, and He promised the patient that He is with them, saying: {And be patient, indeed, God is with the patient}, and He linked victory to patience, saying: {Yes, if you persevere patiently and remain conscious of God, and the enemy come upon you [attacking] in full force, your Lord will reinforce you with five thousand angels}, and He gathered for the patient matters that He did not gather for others, saying: {Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy. And it is those who are the [rightly] guided}. As for the news, peace and blessings be upon him, he said: «Patience is half of faith» and its explanation is that faith is not complete except after abandoning what is not appropriate from words, deeds and beliefs, and by obtaining what is appropriate, then continuing to abandon what is not appropriate is patience, which is the other half, so according to this statement, all faith must be patience, except that abandoning what is not appropriate and doing what is appropriate may be in accordance with desire, so it does not need patience, and it may be contrary to desire, so it needs patience, so it is no crime to make patience half of faith, and peace be upon him said: «Of the best things you have been given is certainty and determination of patience, and whoever is given his share of them does not care what he misses of night prayer and fasting during the day».
