Abdurrahman Wahid, the ruler of Indonesia, delivered an "Accounting Statement" on his actions during his term in office since October 1999 CE. This was presented before the "People's Consultative Assembly," which convened from Tuesday, August 8, 2000 CE, to August 18, 2000 CE. This assembly holds the highest authority in the country and has the power to impeach the president. It is the body that elected him, after the fall of Habibie, Suharto's successor, through a sham election process that took place after suspicious deliberations and maneuvers behind the scenes, even though his party, "Nahdlatul Ummah Party," only had 57 votes out of a total of 686 votes. The most important points in the statement included: his presentation of the problems facing the country, their causes, and how to solve them, and his endeavor to transition to democracy and build a political system on a democratic basis. This part of the statement is what deserves comment. As for the rest, it is irrelevant, especially when he elaborated on what the state will do, not what it has done, and when he blamed previous governments to cover up his shortcomings, weaknesses, and even his confusion in running the government, and when he presented theoretical ideas that are below the level of a political science student's lecture.
