Thinking (at-tafkeer)

Taqiuddin an-Nabhani

The book discusses the importance of thinking for individuals and society, and how the mind distinguishes humans. It also explores the history of thought and scientists' attempts to understand the nature of the mind and thinking.

مقدمة / Introduction

Indeed, man is the best of all creatures, even said – and rightly so – to be superior to angels. Humanity's excellence lies in its intellect; the human mind elevates humans and makes them the best of creation. Therefore, it is essential to understand this mind, and consequently, to understand thinking and the method of thinking. This reality called 'thinking' gives the mind its value and yields the ripe fruits that improve life, improve humanity, and even improve the entire universe with everything in it, including inanimate objects, plants, and animals. Sciences, arts, literature, philosophy, jurisprudence, language, and knowledge itself are products of the mind and, therefore, products of thinking. It is imperative for humanity, life, and the entire universe to grasp the reality of the mind and, consequently, the reality of thinking and the method of thinking. Humanity has traversed this long path of life and time, focusing primarily on the products of the mind and thinking without truly understanding the essence of the mind and thinking. It's true that some, including Muslim and non-Muslim scholars, ancient and modern, have attempted to grasp the reality of the mind, but they have failed. Others have tried to devise a method for thinking, and while they have succeeded in some aspects of this method through scientific achievements, they were misled about the nature of thinking itself and misled others who, impressed by this scientific success, blindly followed. From the days of the Greeks and beyond, they rushed to understand thinking and arrived at what is called logic, succeeding in grasping some ideas, but they corrupted knowledge itself. Logic became a burden on knowledge instead of a means to reach it and a measure of its correctness, as intended. Furthermore, those who rushed to understand thinking also arrived at what is called philosophy, or the love of wisdom, delving into what is beyond existence, beyond matter, creating research that is pleasant in knowledge and results but far from reality and truth, leading many astray and deviating thinking from the right path.

خاتمة / Conclusion

This is a brief overview of the subject of thinking as thinking, presented to the Islamic nation, hoping that its study will cultivate thinking within this nation so that it may return to being the best nation brought forth for mankind. Especially after ten centuries of being distant from thinking, despite several attempts at it. The Islamic nation was afflicted in the fourth century AH by scholars who worked to disable thinking within the nation, advocating the danger of thinking to the nation and its harm to Islam and Muslims. This was when a group of scholars, such as the renowned scholar al-Qaffal, called for the closure of the gate of ijtihad (independent reasoning) and worked to prevent it, convincing people of its danger. Muslims believed and acted upon this call, scholars hesitated to engage in ijtihad, thinkers feared it, and people disliked the existence of mujtahids (those who perform ijtihad). Public opinion across the Islamic world adopted this view, thus disabling thinking, and people remained confined to imitation, abandoning their minds and no longer daring to engage in ijtihad. This prohibition of ijtihad and thinking reached its peak in Islam, leading to the cessation of thinking among people, who became accustomed to this disability. Humans are inherently lazy creatures; therefore, the nation ceased thinking until this century, the fourteenth century AH, spending ten centuries with their thinking disabled. Therefore, it is not easy for a nation that has spent ten centuries of its life with its thinking disabled to revive thinking and consciously understand its value and the value of thinkers. Therefore, millions of books like this one do not guarantee that they will move the nation to think and lead it to make thinking a habit. However, the painful events that crush the nation crushingly and grind it thoroughly inspire hope that thinking will find its way back to the nation. Especially after groups within it have begun to think and try to think, and after thousands have embodied a love of thinking and become thinkers who are not content with anything other than thinking, becoming thinking that lives, moves, and grows. Therefore, the enormity and horror of events, and the fact that thinking has been embodied in individuals, even becoming thinking that walks in the markets among people, these two things create bright hope that thinking will move from individuals to groups and become collective thinking, not individual thinking, that it will be the thinking of the nation, not the thinking of individuals, so that the Islamic nation becomes a thinking nation and returns to being the best nation brought forth for mankind.
