Europe Fears a Russia-America Agreement
The News:
Reuters reported, citing diplomatic sources and European officials, that Europe is exhausted by the contradictory positions of US President Donald Trump in his relations with Russia.
The newspaper stated that "several European diplomats in Washington secretly expressed their dissatisfaction with Trump's volatile approach to Russia, and indicated that any new hardening of his position towards Moscow may be unconvincing." The agency added: "Throughout July and August, Trump praised European leaders and threatened Russia with new sanctions over the Ukrainian conflict. However, after meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Trump changed his position on several aspects of the settlement."
According to a European official, Trump condemned "European countries for buying Russian oil, and suggested imposing 100% tariffs on India and China."
It is worth noting that the Russian and American presidents discussed ways to resolve the Ukrainian conflict during their meeting in Alaska on August 15, where both leaders described the meeting as positive. After the summit, the Russian president expressed the possibility of reaching an end to the conflict in Ukraine, stressing that Russia is interested in a long-term settlement.
Commentary:
Since Trump came to the presidency of the United States, he has been floundering in political actions internally and externally, to the point that he does not mind harming the interests of America in order to implement his personal vision as he imagines it. He launched a war on the Democrats, and even vilified Biden to the greatest extent, and insulted India, which successive American administrations have worked for over three decades to be able to overcome Britain's influence in it.
He also launched a trade war on all countries of the world without relent, and did not take into account the ally or the follower. He also expressed his readiness to solve the dilemma of the Russian-Ukrainian war alone, without involving his traditional European allies, even though the war concerns them more than America. He even went further than that, as he began negotiating on behalf of Ukraine itself, ceding the four Ukrainian regions to Putin as if they were part of his country. He even did not hide his admiration for Putin and his support for him!
However, that does not mean that the relationship between Trump and Putin is going well, but rather it is a relationship of bargaining, bartering, and give and take to achieve desired interests. In the midst of this noise, Europe, its security, and its economic life have become in the wind, but rather have become outside the decision-making circle in a matter that concerns it in the first place. Therefore, we see it making a strange statement because it does not know what Trump wants from Russia, and what they know is that a big game is being plotted against them, and that Europe is a victim of the Russian-American entente.
On the other hand, I see that the matter is arranged between Russia and America, even if indirectly, in order to push Europe by putting pressure on Ukraine to accept any settlement, because Europe cannot protect itself from Russia, let alone protect Ukraine. The presence of American military delegates in the Russian-Belarusian military maneuvers, after the breach of Polish airspace by Russian drones, is but a testament to the extent of this agreement between Russia and America. This is what Europe fears because it will simply be the victim, and everything will be at its own expense!
