Escalating American Crackdown on Islamic Organizations

In a recent interview with radio host Sid Rosenberg, Secretary of State Marco Rubio alluded to the ongoing process of designating the Muslim Brotherhood and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) as terrorist organizations. Minister Rubio stated that these classifications are "in the works, and obviously there are different branches of the Muslim Brotherhood, so each of them will have to be classified."

While Rubio acknowledged that such designations require legal procedures to withstand judicial challenges, his comments reflect a growing trend of portraying certain Islamic groups - foreign and domestic - as threats to national security and adversaries of American foreign policy. This echoes previous statements by White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt, who stated that Mahmoud Khalil was targeted for being "hostile to the foreign policy and national security interests of the United States of America."

For decades, Muslims in America have been subjected to espionage, profiling, criminalization, and intimidation under the guise of counter-terrorism and national security. Anti-Islamic rhetoric from previous administrations, both Democratic and Republican, has led to an increase in hate crimes against the Muslim community.

It is not limited to the Muslim Brotherhood or the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), but affects all Islamic organizations and our communities at once. Targeting Islamic organizations for political reasons - especially those that defend Muslim issues or Islamic rule - cannot be viewed in isolation from the broader pattern of hostility towards Islam.

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the Companions, may God be pleased with them, faced similar political bans, exiles, and smear campaigns in Mecca, not out of violence, but out of calling to Islam.

Islam obliges us to defend our religion, speak the truth, and organize collectively for the good of the nation. We Muslims in America must stand together firmly on the truth, unite our voices, defend each other, and reject the intimidation designed to silence us and obliterate our religion.

Allah Almighty reminds us, saying: ﴿The believers are but brothers﴾, and His saying: ﴿The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those - Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise﴾.

We in Hizb ut-Tahrir urge all Islamic organizations to protect each other. It is not about one organization, but about protecting our Islamic identity in America.
