The Radar: Updates on the War in Sudan
By Professor Abdelsalam Ishaq
The Security Council held a session on Sudan at its headquarters in New York on Friday, June 27, 2025, and the statement of Assistant Secretary-General for African Affairs Martha Pobee came: (Last week, the Security Council heard from our humanitarian colleagues about the deteriorating situation. We are seeking an anticipated and time-bound humanitarian truce to facilitate the safe movement of humanitarian aid to and from areas affected by the ongoing fighting, starting with El Fasher, and to allow civilians to leave voluntarily and safely.
She revealed the intensification of the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General to Sudan, Ramtane Lamamra, who has remained in direct and regular contact with a wide range of civilian groups, in appreciation of the indispensable role they play in finding a way out of the current crisis, and more importantly, in shaping future transitions in Sudan.
The European Union also hosted the fourth consultative meeting in Brussels last week to enhance coordination of peace initiatives and efforts in Sudan. This meeting represented another important step towards strengthening coordination and political support.
This mechanism brings together multilateral organizations and key member states working on mediation in Sudan. We are in the process of finalizing consultations on its fifth version, which will be organized by the African Union and the United Nations in Addis Ababa.)
This statement by Pobee must be examined, as it is the core of what is happening in Sudan. The truce agreed upon by the army commander, Lieutenant General Burhan, has several readings; including since when have the conflicting parties, especially the Rapid Support Forces, adhered to the truces signed between them? And why is it only in El Fasher, with the fighting intensifying in other areas of Darfur and Kordofan? Or does the fall of El Fasher, God forbid, mean the secession of Darfur? Knowing that there have been recent disagreements between the army and its ally, the Joint Forces, who are fighting fiercely in El Fasher, and their disagreement was due to the division of the cake; ministerial portfolios.
Therefore, the United Nations is seeking, through the truce, to empty El Fasher of its people, as stated by Pobee: (Allowing civilians to leave voluntarily and safely). This phrase is dangerous, meaning that if you do not leave voluntarily, you will leave forcibly! The people of El Fasher have been defending their city, and they have been subjected to siege and starvation in order to break their resolve and strength, and it seems that this war will be long and will not be resolved militarily, as the army leaders and behind them America have been repeating.
Military control in Kordofan is affected by the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces, as each party seeks to strengthen its positions and control strategic areas. The military situation in the region is characterized by instability and the continuation of battles and skirmishes between the conflicting forces.
The states of Kordofan (North, South, and West) are witnessing rapid and complex military and humanitarian developments, with the continuation of the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support Forces, in addition to the movements of other forces such as the Sudan People's Liberation Movement-North led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu.
At a time when the city of El Obeid and its surroundings are witnessing continuous confrontations.
The Rapid Support Forces redeployed intensively in North Kordofan, stationed in areas such as Al-Dankoj, Khor Taqat, and Ruheid al-Nuba, and stormed more than 40 villages around Al-Obeid in order to tighten the noose on the strategic city.
The Sudanese army is targeting gatherings of the Rapid Support Forces from the air to prevent them from spreading freely in the vast areas.
The Sudanese army is fighting fierce battles in the major cities of South Kordofan and announced that it had extended its control over Al-Diling, the second largest city in the state.
The Sudan People's Liberation Movement - North installed cannons on the cities of Al-Diling, Kadugli, and Umm Burambita, and began shelling them with heavy artillery, and is seeking to cut the road between Kadugli and Al-Diling to control it.
The Rapid Support Forces announced the control of areas such as Al-Dubaibat and Al-Hamadi in South Kordofan. As for West Kordofan, areas such as Al-Nuhud, Al-Khowei, and Al-Dubaibat are witnessing fierce battles and catastrophic humanitarian conditions.
The Sudan People's Liberation Movement, led by Abdelaziz al-Hilu, also announced that its forces had taken control of the Al-Dashol area in South Kordofan State on Saturday, which led to the re-closure of the national road between Al-Diling and Kadugli.
It explained that its forces began the attack on the Al-Dashol and Al-Karqal garrisons on Tuesday, June 17, and were able to control the Al-Dashol garrison, then advanced to the Al-Karqal garrison, before the armed forces later regained the two regions. The movement confirmed that it had resumed the attack on the Al-Dashol area and was able to take full control of it, which led to the re-cutting of the national road linking Al-Diling and Kadugli.
The events in North and West Kordofan have caused the displacement of thousands of residents, and the number of internally displaced persons has reached more than 300,000, living in crowded and ill-equipped shelters.
Shortage of food, water, and medicine: Many cities and regions are suffering from a suffocating siege, which has led to a severe shortage of food supplies, which threatens famine with a significant increase in the prices of basic commodities, the collapse of basic services, and the interruption of communications, electricity, and drinking water in many regions, which increases the suffering of the population.
Fears are growing of the spread of diseases such as cholera, as deaths have been recorded as a result, in cities such as the capital Khartoum, especially with the absence of clean water and the shortage of health facilities and medicines.
O people of Sudan: Have you not yet realized who is benefiting from this cursed war that has destroyed everything? It is America, and it is carrying out the conspiracy at the hands of our own people from the military and civilians, so take them in hand to save our country and the countries of Muslims from the injustice of the unjust regimes, and establish a state of justice; the Rightly Guided Caliphate according to the method of Prophethood.
