Troy Davis and the ‘Irvine 11′: American injustices at home

When you mention the words Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib, rendition, Bagram, and the Iraq invasion, what comes to mind? For many people, it is America's impunity and brutality when she acts abroad, especially in the Muslim world in the era of the so called war on terror. It is her flouting of the principles she claims to uphold and preaches to the world. At home, in terms of how she treats her citizens, surely the picture is different? Yes and No.

Two cases last week highlighted an underlying trend in America's treatment of some of its citizens. One was the execution of Troy Davis (21st September 2011), a black man accused of fatally shooting an off-duty police officer on the bases of eye witness testimony. The case drew international attention because there was no forensic evidence and seven out of nine key witnesses had recanted their testimony. There was no physical evidence linking Davis to the shooting and he continuously maintained his innocence. Yet, despite this overwhelming doubt about his guilt, he was executed by the US state of Georgia. In the same week, in the same state, a white prisoner, Samuel Crowe - who had confessed to the crime of murder was granted clemency at the last minute and is now serving a life sentence for his crime. Many outside America were shocked by the execution of Troy Davis. Sadly, few Americans batted an eyelid at such injustices at home. Proportionally, America executes more black prisoners than whites, something that race campaigners point to.

As I came out of a meeting last Friday (23rd September), I checked my phone and saw a message that the Muslim students (popularly referred to as the ‘Irvine 11') had been convicted - for heckling the Israeli Ambassador's speech.

It was one of those times I know I'll remember for the rest of my life, a seminal moment that shows how America treats ordinary Muslims in the era of the so called ‘war on terror', which many regard as a war on Islam.

On February 8, 2010 the Israeli Ambassador to the US, Michael Oren, arrived at the University of California Irvine, to deliver a public address. During his speech, he was interrupted by Muslim students, who did nothing more than heckle him over the Israeli entity's brutal violence in the occupied territories.

Oren previously served in the Israeli Defence Force and was a military spokesman during the 2006 Israel-Lebanon and other conflicts.

You can see a video of their protest here http://youtu.be/WsdtafcbqrE

as the eleven students were removed one by one from the room, to boos and cheers.

US President Obama has been booed, demonstrators have interrupted proceedings in Congress and the Senate and non-Muslims who heckled Netanyahu the previous year were never prosecuted, so to many people's surprise, the Irvine 11 were prosecuted and found guilty on the 23rd September 2011.

This is an indictment of America's claim to free speech, the supposed First Amendment constitutional right that protects free speech, and its justice system. The Muslim students were prosecuted and found guilty of disrupting the ambassador's speech.

The prosecuting District Attorney (DA) said the students had violated the first Amendment by substantially limiting Oren's ability to communicate his ideas. Was this argument used against those who heckled Obama or Netanyahu? No. Didn't the students also have a claim to the First Amendment ‘free speech' as their supporters argued?

By prosecuting these Muslim students, America proved it has a two-tier system of justice for Muslims and non-Muslims - just as the Troy Davis case shows that there is a two-tier system of justice for blacks and whites. It also proved that ‘freedom of speech' is not for all - it is subject to political considerations. Although these ten students (charges were dropped against the eleventh) were not imprisoned, they face community service, a fine and criminal records - for heckling a speaker!

Next time Obama - or any US politician - stands up to speak about how America upholds ‘freedom and democracy' and about the great treatment of Muslims or black people in America, all one needs to say is "Irvine 11", ‘Troy Davis.' The biggest casualties of these decisions are the values America claims to uphold.

When it takes a principle - that it proudly claims is one of its defining features - and violates it for political, or other interests, it demeans those values and shows its own public and the world that they are not actually as important or robust as they formally claimed them to be.

Netanyahu's statements about "Greater Israel" are a declaration of war that nullifies treaties and mobilizes armies, and anything less is treason

Press Release

Netanyahu's statements about "Greater Israel" are a declaration of war

that nullifies treaties and mobilizes armies, and anything less is treason

Here is the war criminal Netanyahu announcing it frankly and without interpretation that serves the cowardly Arab rulers and their mouthpieces, saying in an interview with the Hebrew channel i24: "I am on a mission of generations and with a historical and spiritual mandate, I strongly believe in the vision of Greater Israel, that is, the one that includes historical Palestine and parts of Jordan and Egypt," and he was preceded by the criminal Smotrich with the same statements and annexing parts of the Arab countries surrounding Palestine, including Jordan, and in the same context, the first enemy of Islam and Muslims, the President of America, Trump, gave him the green light to expand, saying that "Israel is that small spot compared to those huge landmasses, and I wondered if it could get more land because it is really very small."

This statement comes after the announcement by the Jewish entity of its intention to occupy the Gaza Strip after the Knesset announced the annexation of the West Bank and the expansion of settlement construction, thereby eliminating the two-state solution on the ground, and similarly Smotrich's statement today about the massive settlement plan in the "E1" area and his statements about preventing the establishment of a Palestinian state, which eliminates any hopes for a Palestinian state.

These statements are a declaration of war, and this deformed entity would not have dared to make them if its leaders had found someone to discipline them, end their arrogance, and put an end to their continuous crimes since the establishment of their entity and its expansion with the help of the colonizing West, and the betrayal of the Muslim rulers.

There is no longer a need for statements clarifying what its political vision has become, clearer than the sun at high noon, and what is happening on the ground in a live broadcast of the attacks of the Jewish entity in Palestine and the threat to occupy parts of the Muslim countries surrounding Palestine, including Jordan, Egypt, and Syria, and the statements of its criminal leaders, is a serious threat that should not be taken as absurd claims adopted by extremists in its government and reflecting its crisis situation, as stated in the statement of the Jordanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which sufficed, as usual, to condemn these statements, as did some Arab countries such as Qatar, Egypt, and Saudi Arabia.

The threats of the Jewish entity, but rather the war of extermination it is committing in Gaza, the annexation of the West Bank, and its intentions to expand, are directed at the rulers in Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria, and Lebanon, as they are directed at the peoples of these countries; as for the rulers, the nation has known their maximum responses, which are condemnation, denunciation, and appealing to the international system, and identifying with the American deals for the region despite the participation of America and Europe in the Jewish entity's war on the people of Palestine, and they have no choice but to obey them, and they are too helpless to bring a sip of water to a child in Gaza, without Jewish permission.

As for the peoples, they feel the danger and the threats of the Jews as real and not absurd illusions, as the Jordanian and Arab Foreign Ministries claim, to disclaim the real and practical response to them, and they see the brutal reality of this entity in Gaza, so it is not permissible for these peoples, especially the people of power and immunity among them, specifically the armies, not to have a word in responding to the threats of the Jewish entity, for the principle in the armies, as their chiefs of staff claim, is that they are to protect the sovereignty of their countries, especially when they see their rulers colluding with their enemies who threaten their countries with occupation, but rather they should have supported their brothers in Gaza for 22 months, for Muslims are one nation apart from other people, they are not divided by borders or multiple rulers.

The popular speeches of the movements and tribes in response to the threats of the Jewish entity remain as long as the echo of their speeches remains, then they quickly disappear, especially when they identify with the hollow condemnation responses of the Foreign Ministry and the support of the regime if it is not taken to task in a practical procedure that does not wait for the enemy in its own home, but rather moves to eliminate it and those who stand between it and them, God Almighty said: ﴿And if you fear treachery from a people, throw [their treaty] back at them, [putting you] on equal terms. Indeed, Allah does not like the treacherous﴾ And the least of those who claim to be lying in wait for the Jewish entity and its threats is to take the regime to task by canceling the treacherous Wadi Araba treaty, and cutting off all relations and agreements with it, otherwise anything less is treason against God, the Messenger, and the Muslims, and yet the solution to the problems of Muslims remains in establishing their Islamic state according to the method of Prophethood, not only to resume Islamic life but also to eliminate the colonizers and those who ally with them.

﴿O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves, for they will not spare you [any] ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly shown you the signs, if you will use reason.

The Radar: Whoever complains peacefully is punished, and whoever carries weapons, kills, and violates sanctities is given a share of power and wealth!

By Professor Ghada Abdul Jabbar (Um Awab)

Last week, primary school students in the city of Karima in the Northern State carried out a peaceful protest denouncing the interruption of electricity for several months, in a scorching summer. Consequently, the General Intelligence Service in Karima in the Marawi locality, northern Sudan, summoned female teachers on Monday after their participation in the protest against the power outage for nearly 5 months in the area. Aisha Awad, the principal of Obaid Allah Hammad School, told Sudan Tribune that "the General Intelligence Service summoned her and 6 other teachers," and stated that the education administration in Karima unit issued a decision to transfer her and the school's agent, Mashair Muhammad Ali, to other schools far away from the unit, because of participating in this peaceful protest. She explained that the school to which she and the school's agent were transferred requires 5,000 daily for transportation, while her monthly salary is 140,000. (Sudan Tribune, 08/11/2025)

Comment:

Whoever complains peacefully by standing respectfully in front of the official's office, holding up signs, demanding the simplest necessities of a decent life, is considered a threat to security and is summoned, investigated, and punished beyond endurance. As for those who carry weapons, conspire with foreign entities, kill, and violate sanctities, claiming they want to end marginalization, this criminal is honored, appointed as a minister, and given shares and quotas in power and wealth! Is there no wise man among you?! What is wrong with your judgment?! What imbalance is this, and what standards of justice are followed by those who have taken the seats of power by a trick of time?

These people have no connection to governance, and they consider every cry against them, believing that frightening the people is the best way to perpetuate their rule!

Since the departure of the British army, Sudan has been ruled by one system with two faces. The system is capitalism, and the two faces are democracy and dictatorship. Neither of these faces has reached what Islam has reached, which allows all the people - Muslim and non-Muslim - to complain about poor care. It even allows the non-Muslim to complain about the poor application of Islamic laws to them. The people must hold the ruler accountable for his shortcomings, and they must form parties based on Islam to hold the ruler accountable. Where are these influential people, who manage the affairs of the people with the mentality of spies who antagonize people, from the saying of Al-Farooq, may God be pleased with him: (May God bless those who point out my faults to me)?

I conclude with the story of the Caliph of the Muslims, Muawiyah, to be an example for those who punish teachers for their grievances, how the Caliph of the Muslims views his people and how he wants them to be men, because the strength of society is the strength of the state, and its weakness and fear is the weakness of the state, if only they knew.

A man named Jariya bin Qudama al-Saadi entered upon Muawiyah one day, who was then the Commander of the Believers, and with Muawiyah were three of Caesar of Rome's ministers. Muawiyah said to him: "Aren't you the one who worked with Ali in all his positions?" Jariya said: "Leave Ali alone, may God honor his face, for we have not hated Ali since we loved him, nor have we deceived him since we advised him." Muawiyah said to him: "Woe to you, Jariya, how insignificant you were to your family when they named you Jariya..." Jariya replied: "You are more insignificant to your family, who named you Muawiyah, which is the bitch that was in heat and howled, and the dogs howled." Muawiyah shouted: "Shut up, may you have no mother." Jariya replied: "Rather, you shut up, Muawiyah, for I have a mother who bore me for the swords with which we met you, and we have given you hearing and obedience on the condition that you judge us according to what God has revealed. If you fulfill it, we will fulfill it for you, and if you turn away, then we have left men who are strong and armor that is extended, who will not leave you to oppress or harm them." Muawiyah shouted at him: "May God not increase the likes of you." Jariya said: "O you, speak kindly, and be mindful of us, for the worst of shepherds is the destroyer." Then he left angrily without asking permission.

The three ministers turned to Muawiyah, and one of them said: "Our Caesar is not addressed by any of his subjects except while he is kneeling, sticking his forehead to the legs of his throne. If the voice of his closest confidant or relative rose, his punishment would be to be cut into pieces or burned. How is it with this coarse Bedouin with his rude behavior, and he came threatening you, as if his head is from your head?" Muawiyah smiled, then said: "I govern men who do not fear the blame of anyone in upholding the truth, and all my people are like this Bedouin, none of them prostrates to anyone other than God, and none of them is silent about oppression, and I have no superiority over anyone except in piety. I have offended the man with my tongue, and he has retaliated against me, and I was the one who started, and the one who starts is more unjust." The eldest of the Roman ministers cried until his beard was wet, so Muawiyah asked him about the reason for his crying, and he said: "We thought ourselves equal to you in strength and power before today, but now that I have seen in this council what I have seen, I am afraid that you will extend your rule over the capital of our kingdom one day..."

That day did indeed come, and Byzantium collapsed under the blows of the men, as if it were a spider's web. Will the Muslims return as men who do not fear the blame of anyone in upholding the truth?

Tomorrow is near for those who await it, when the rule of Islam returns and life is turned upside down, and the earth shines with the light of its Lord with a righteous caliphate on the method of prophecy.
