With the Hadith
"Chapter on the Prophet's Saying, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, If You Knew What I Know, You Would Laugh Little and Weep Much"
We greet you all, dear listeners everywhere, in a new episode of your program "With the Hadith," and we begin with the best greeting: Peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you.
It is mentioned in Fath al-Bari, commentary on Sahih al-Bukhari by Ibn Hajar al-Asqalani, with modifications, in "Chapter on the Prophet's Saying, Peace and Blessings Be Upon Him, If You Knew What I Know, You Would Laugh Little and Weep Much."
Yahya bin Bukair narrated to us, saying: Al-Laith narrated to us, from Aqil, from Ibn Shihab, from Saeed bin Al-Musayyib, that Abu Hurairah, may God be pleased with him, used to say: The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much."
What is meant by knowledge here is what relates to the greatness of God and His vengeance on those who disobey Him, and the horrors that occur at the time of death, in the grave, and on the Day of Resurrection. The appropriateness of much weeping and little laughter in this context is clear. What is meant is intimidation. Another reason for this hadith has been reported by Sunayd in his Tafsir with a weak chain of narration, and Al-Tabarani reported from Ibn Umar that the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, went out to the mosque and found people talking and laughing, so he said: By the One in Whose hand is my soul, and then he mentioned this hadith.
Al-Hasan Al-Basri said: "Whoever knows that death is his destination, the Day of Resurrection is his appointment, and standing before God Almighty is his spectacle, then he should prolong his grief in this world." Al-Kirmani said: In this hadith, there is an example of the rhetorical device of contrasting laughter with weeping and little with much, and matching each of them.
Dear listeners:
There is no doubt that the matter is serious, very serious... The horrors of the Day of Resurrection are great and deserve to be examined in detail. How many Muslims today dwell on the details of trivial matters? How many of them dwell on trivial topics such as following the football World Cup, the names of the players, their ages, the names of the clubs they have played for, and even their shoe sizes? Or following the latest trends in the world of fashion and monitoring the artistic and personal lives of male and female artists, and many other trivial, even sometimes forbidden, matters of this world. But they have not bothered to look beyond this life, they have not bothered to review their accounts regarding the Hereafter, "Or have they not recognized their Messenger, so they are denying him?"
If Muslims knew as much about the unseen and the Hereafter as their Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, knew, they would laugh little and weep much... If Muslims knew as much about the unseen and the Hereafter, they would not dedicate their lives to the matters of this world, and they would not be satisfied with building luxurious houses or riding fancy cars...
If Muslims knew as much about the unseen and the Hereafter, they would not dedicate it to marriage and procreation, nor to accumulating wealth...
If Muslims knew as much about the unseen and the Hereafter, they would be affected by the state of their nation... and they would weep for the children, women, and elderly Muslims...
If Muslims knew as much about the unseen and the Hereafter, they would save their nation from the clutches of the disbelieving West, which works day and night to drown it in the swamps of intellectual and cultural backwardness...
If Muslims knew as much about the unseen and the Hereafter, they would not refrain from working with those who are working to restore the glory of Islam, the Second Caliphate according to the Prophetic method.
O God, hasten for us a Caliphate that unites the scattered Muslims, instills in them fear and piety of You, and reflection on great matters, and relieves them of the calamity they are in. O God, illuminate the earth with the light of Your noble face. O God, Amen, Amen.
Dear listeners, until we meet you with another Prophetic Hadith, we leave you in God's care, and peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you.
