With the Hadith
From the etiquette of teaching
We greet you all, dear listeners everywhere, in a new episode of your program "With the Hadith," and we begin with the best greeting: peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you.
Narrated Shaqiq: We were sitting at the door of Abdullah, waiting for him. Yazid bin Muawiyah al-Nakhai passed by us, so we said: "Inform him of our presence." So he entered upon him, and he was not long before Abdullah came out to us and said: "I am informed of your presence, and what prevents me from coming out to you except that I dislike to bore you. The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, used to preach to us at times for fear of boredom for us." Agreed upon.
((It is stated in Al-Nawawi's commentary with a slight modification:
His saying (al-sa'amah) with the lengthening: boredom.
And his saying: (Umillakum), meaning: I cause you to fall into boredom, which is annoyance.
And the meaning of (Yatakhawooluna): He visits us, this is the famous interpretation of it, Al-Qadi said: It was said: He corrects us, and it was said: He surprises us with it, and Abu Ubaid said: He guides us, and it was said: He detains us as a person detains his charges, and he visits us with the dotted Khaa with all of them except Abu Amr, who said: It is with the unpointed Haa, meaning he seeks their conditions and times of activity.
And in this hadith: moderation in preaching, so that hearts do not become bored with it, and its purpose is lost.))
Ibn Hajar mentioned in his Fath with a slight modification ((Al-Khattabi said: What is meant is that he used to observe the times in teaching them and advising them, and he did not do it every day for fear of boredom, and Al-Takhawool is taking care, and it was said that some of them narrated it with the unpointed Haa and interpreted it to mean that what is meant is that he examines their conditions in which they get energy for the sermon, so he preaches to them in it and does not overburden them so that they do not get bored,
His saying (dislike of boredom for us) means that boredom occurs from us, and that boredom includes the meaning of hardship.
And in it is the Prophet's kindness, may God bless him and grant him peace, to his companions and the good way to teach them and make them understand so that they take from him with enthusiasm, not with annoyance or boredom, and he is followed in that, for teaching gradually is easier and more conducive to steadfastness than taking it with hard work and rivalry. And in it is a virtue for Ibn Masoud for following the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, in word and deed and his preservation of that.}
Dear listeners: One of the etiquettes of teaching is that the teacher should visit the people with the lesson so that they do not get bored with it. He must be concise in the speech so that his words are easy, comprehensive, and eloquent. Too much talk causes boredom, in addition to being a place for slips, defects, and errors. Ibn Abbas, may God be pleased with them both, said: «Preach to the people once every Friday, and if you do more, then twice, and if you do more, then three times, and do not bore the people with this Qur’an, and do not come to the people while they are in conversation and interrupt their conversation so that they get bored, but listen, and if they order you, then tell them while they desire it, and beware of rhyming in supplication, for I pledged to the Messenger of God r and his companions did not do it» Narrated by Al-Bukhari.
Dear listeners, until we meet you with another prophetic hadith, we leave you in God's care, and peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you.
