With the Hadith
Whoever seeks the world lawfully
We greet you all, dear listeners everywhere, in a new episode of your program "With the Hadith," and we begin with the best greeting, so peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you.
Ibn Abi Shaybah narrated in his Musannaf, saying:
Abu Bakr narrated to us, saying: Waki’ narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us, from Hajjaj ibn Furafisa, from a man, from Mak-hul, from Abu Hurairah, who said: The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: "Whoever seeks the world lawfully, abstaining from begging, striving for his family, and being compassionate to his neighbor, will meet God with his face like the moon on the night of the full moon. And whoever seeks the world lawfully, accumulating, showing off, will meet God while He is angry with him."
It is mentioned in the book Mirqat al-Mafatih Sharh Mishkat al-Masabih in explaining this hadith:
His saying: (Whoever seeks the world lawfully): meaning through a lawful way.
(Abstaining): that is, for the sake of seeking chastity from begging: In al-Nihayah, abstaining is seeking chastity and being chaste, which is refraining from what is forbidden and asking from people.
(And striving for his family): that is, for the sake of his family members for whom he is obligated to provide.
(And being compassionate to his neighbor): being kind to him with what is surplus to him.
(Will meet God Almighty on the Day of Resurrection and his face): that is, while his face, in terms of the perfection of light and the ultimate joy, is (like the moon on the night of the full moon): He restricted it to this because it is the time of its perfection.
(And whoever seeks the world lawfully): that is, in addition to seeking it unlawfully.
(Accumulating): that is, while seeking an abundance of wealth for the best condition and not spending it on improving the afterlife.
(Boasting): that is, over the poor, as is the habit of the foolish among the rich.
(Showing off): that is, if any good or giving comes from him.
(Will meet God Almighty while He is angry with him):
Perhaps, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, did not mention whoever seeks the forbidden, either because it is understood from the content of the speech, or as an indication that it is not the work of the people of Islam, or as a notification that eating and approaching the forbidden is forbidden, even if there is no seeking or desire.
Al-Tibi, may God have mercy on him, said: In the hadith is the meaning of the verse: (The Day [some] faces will turn white and [some] faces will turn black), and these are two expressions of God Almighty's pleasure and anger. So his saying: and his face is like the moon is an exaggeration in obtaining satisfaction by indicating his saying in contrast: while He is angry with him (narrated by al-Bayhaqi in Shu'ab al-Iman, and Abu Nu'aym in al-Hilya) ended.
Dear listeners
In this noble hadith, the Messenger, may God bless him and grant him peace, explains that Islam, just as it urged lawful work, also urged spending lawfully, and forbade hoarding wealth or spending it for showing off, pride, and arrogance.
The motives for work, i.e. striving for earning (seeking the world) among people, as the noble hadith explained, range between two things:
Striving in obedience
And striving in disobedience
As for seeking in obedience, it is that a man works to earn his livelihood so that he is not forced to ask people, so he wants to preserve his dignity and protect himself from the humiliation of begging.
Or for the sake of earning a living for his family, which is one of the obligations that the true Sharia has ordered him to do, and what cannot be done except by it is obligatory, so this work of his is obligatory.
Or for the sake of increasing his wealth to help the needy and relieve the distressed, it is an act in which the feeling of responsibility is manifested. And keenness to fulfill the right of brotherhood in Islam.
These are motives that Islam wants and the Most Merciful is pleased with, so its reward was distinct and great.......The moon on the night of the full moon is at its full brightness and splendor. This is the state of whoever has attained God's pleasure and love.
As for seeking the world in disobedience, as mentioned in the hadith, it is to seek it lawfully but for a forbidden purpose
Collecting money and increasing it without spending it is considered hoarding wealth, and God has forbidden hoarding wealth. God Almighty said: "And those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the way of God - give them tidings of a painful punishment."
Likewise, collecting money in order to spend it to show off to people and be proud and arrogant towards them is also forbidden, and its doer incurs the wrath of God and what a wretched destination.
O God, make us among those who spend with kindness, and do not make us among the stingy or the show-offs.
Amen
Dear listeners, until we meet you with another prophetic hadith, we leave you in God's care, and peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you.
