With the Hadith
O Abu Umair, what happened to the little nightingale?
We greet you, dear listeners, everywhere, in a new episode of your program "With the Hadith," and we begin with the best greeting: Peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you.
It is mentioned in Sunan al-Tirmidhi - The Book on Righteousness and Maintaining Relations with Relatives, regarding the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace - Chapter on what was said about joking
Abdullah bin Al-Waddah Al-Kufi narrated to us, Abdullah bin Idris narrated to us, from Shu'bah, from Abi Al-Tiyyah, from Anas, who said: "The Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, would mingle with us until he would say to a young brother of mine, 'O Abu Umair, what happened to the little nightingale?'"

His saying: (from Abi Al-Tiyyah) with a Fatha on the upper المثناة and a Shaddah on the lower التحتانية, and its end is neglected, his name is Yazid bin Hamid, famous for his nickname, trustworthy and reliable.
His saying: (Al-Daba'i) with a Damma on the dotted dad and a Fatha on the muwahhada.
His saying: (until he would say) the extent of his mingling, meaning his mingling with our family extended to the child who he would play with.
His saying: (what happened to the little nightingale?) with a Damma on the noon and a Fatha on the dotted ghain, a diminutive of naghr with a Damma then a Fatha, a bird like a sparrow with a reddish beak, the people of Medina call it the bulbul, meaning what is its affair and condition, Al-Qastallani said. And it was said in Al-Qamus: Al-Naghr like sarad, the bulbul, its plural is naghran like sardan, end quote. And it was said in Al-Nihayah: Al-Nughair is a diminutive of Al-Naghr, which is a bird resembling a sparrow with a red beak, end quote.
Dear listeners:
This hadith indicates two things, the first of which is the permissibility of giving a nickname to a child, and making it endearing.
As for the other matter, it is the urging to play with the child and joke with him, for in this matter there is mercy and righteousness towards children, and neglecting it is considered harshness and rudeness. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah who said: "Al-Aqra' bin Habis saw the Prophet, may God bless him and grant him peace, kissing Al-Hasan, Ibn Abi Umar said Al-Hussein or Al-Hasan, and he said: I have ten children and I have not kissed any of them, so the Messenger of God, may God bless him and grant him peace, said: He who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy."
May God bless our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his companions, and grant them peace.
Dear listeners, until we meet you with another prophetic hadith, we leave you in God's care, and peace, mercy, and blessings of God be upon you.
