The International Criminal Court issued yesterday, Tuesday, arrest warrants for two leaders of the Taliban movement in Afghanistan, on charges of persecuting women and girls. The court said that there are logical reasons that led it to believe that the leader of the movement, Hibatullah Akhundzada, and Abdul Hakim Haqqani, the head of the Supreme Court during the administration of the Afghan government led by the Taliban movement, committed a crime against humanity consisting of persecution based on the human gender against girls and women and other people who do not adhere to the Taliban's gender policy. The court judges wrote in a statement: There are "reasonable motives" to suspect that Akhundzada and Haqqani "committed, through issuing orders and incitement, a crime against humanity consisting of persecution... for reasons related to gender." She added: "While the Taliban imposed certain rules and prohibitions on the population as a whole, girls and women were specifically targeted because of their gender, depriving them of their basic rights and freedoms."
